CHAPLAIN & SPIRITUAL
MILITARY ART
Welcome to the section dedicated to our incredible Chaplains, past & present, who are often working behind the scenes taking care of spiritual needs for our formations. This portfolio also includes other poignant, spiritual lithograph sets

Foreward & Giving Back

By 2016, Solovey had just completed his ninth combat deployment. Upon re-deployment to Ft. Bragg, he received orders to Italy where he befriended another fantastic & remarkable Chaplain. Like so many GWOT Soldiers who negotiated multiple combat tours , he did not have the words of thanks for all the previous Chaplains--especially since 9-11 and OEF I to Afghanistan.
Something needed to be done to express that thankfulness & to remind the Chaplains of how much an impact they have on every formation & every Soldier. "Armed with Prayer since 1775" was the token of thanks. In 2019, Solovey travelled to the Chaplain School at Ft. Jackson, SC & donated the framed original.

"Warrior" 2015
Specifically designed to express the significance of being part of the "Warrior Class" whilst also alluding to one's faith in executing the "Muddy Boots" daily business--especially in forward-deployed areas. Printed on light beige cardstock paper.
The second purpose was to include deliberate "white space" for optional personalization to include skill badges, unit crests, awards, etc...in the form of hand-drawn individual "Thumbnail Sketches"

"Praying Hands" 2014
While in service, Solovey developed several meaningful relationships with all his Chaplains--especially during deployments. He remembered a set of Praying Hands book ends his Grandfather once owned in the Pennsylvania Dutch region of York; they were most likely inspired by the German artist Albrecht Durer. In 2014, Solovey tackled his own pencil rendition as small tokens of thanks for his Chaplains' pastoral work & service to the Soldiers

Honoring the Fallen
In 2013, Solovey decided to craft something especially bespoke & singular to honor our Fallen Heroes.
The idea was to capture & properly illustrate a reverent, horse-drawn military funeral with full honors. The setting would be a non-descript military cemetery with stone pillar gates inspired by the original 1839 "Limits Gates" at VMI. Solovey also wanted to depict the iconic Soldier's Horse with backward-facing boots hanging from the saddle.

A 8.5" x 11" pencil sketch (left) would soon be produced with no planned lithographs. Through Solovey's master engraver, a 18" x 24" black marble plate was used as the canvas (center). At great expense, it was then professionally framed (right) 24" x 29.5". Only two were ever produced. This framed sample hung on display at the Virginia War Memorial in 2025 during Solovey's gallery for six months.
"Ode to the Warrior Class" 2009
