By 2002, Solovey had only experienced a previous deployment to Bosnia in 1998. Upon arriving to OEF I in Kandahar, Afghanistan he signed-in to 2/3 Special Forces Group (FOB 32). The headquarters building seemed to have been, perhaps, some sort of Soviet-era military or police facility complete with its own jail cell.
Behind this headquarter building, was an empty, defunct, and bullet-ridden mosque. It reminded him of some of the abandoned & damaged chapels in Bosnia. He decided to sketch it & it would soon become an iconic watercolor painting
