AFGHANISTAN  FINE  ART

During Solovey's several Afghanistan (OEF) deployments, he also composed additional sketches & watercolour pieces that were more specific to the local environment & architecture.  Above & beyond the deployed unit collages, here are a few other offerings within the portfolio

"Jingle Truck" 2007

Jingle Truck 2007.JPG

Watercolour completed in-country at Bagram Air Base.  Iconic AFG transport & supply vehicles highly decorated and painted.  Known for the how they would "jingle" while moving.  Every single OEF Veteran remembers the smell of diesel & the sandy dust these trucks produced

Khandahar Mosque Concept Sketch #1.JPG

By 2002, Solovey had only experienced a previous deployment to Bosnia in 1998.  Upon arriving to OEF I in Kandahar, Afghanistan he signed-in to 2/3 Special Forces Group (FOB 32).  The headquarters building seemed to have been, perhaps, some sort of Soviet-era military or police facility complete with its own jail cell.

Behind this headquarter building, was an empty, defunct, and bullet-ridden mosque.  It reminded him of some of the abandoned & damaged chapels in Bosnia.  He decided to sketch it & it would soon become an iconic watercolor painting

"Kandahar Mosque" 2003

Solovey's simple watercolor in black & white of the mosque located behind his headquarters building.
